Music competition pits Midwest high school students against each other
Winners get a chance to play with La Crosse Symphony Orchestra
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — High school musicians from around the Midwest found themselves in La Crosse Saturday, competing for a chance to play with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.
The 17th annual Rising Stars Concerto Competition ended Saturday night, with one pianist and one instrumentalist winner. Both winners received a $2,000 award, along with the opportunity to play with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.
Officials say this experience can be a stepping-stone to a lifetime of musical performances.
“The goal is to showcase the incredible talent of the high school students in the Tri-State area. It’s just amazing, the level many of these, I’d call them kids but they’re just young adults with incredible skills, collegiate and above. They just wow our audiences,” said Rising Stars Concerto Competition Co-Chair David Reedy.
While competitors came from throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa, half of the finalists are from our area.
