Mt. La Crosse opens for season

Ski hills open on Thanksgiving weekend for second straight year

Skiers and snowboarders enjoyed warm temperatures as Mt. La Crosse opened for the season on Saturday.

Four of the ski hill’s 19 runs opened up at 9 a.m. They hope to have even more runs open by next weekend.

General Manager Darcie Breidel says it’s the second year in a row Mt. La Crosse has been able to open ahead of schedule on Thanksgiving weekend.

“We were able to open earlier this year than we have been able to [in the past],” said Breidel. “Last year we opened this same weekend and we hadn’t been able to do that for about 10 years. These early season openings are just wonderful and it makes us think that maybe winter may be coming back to Wisconsin.”

Even though temperatures peaked in the mid-40s on Saturday, the recent cold stretch allowed them to make enough snow ahead of time to still open early.

“If it’s going to be 40 degrees in winter, we’re okay with it if it’s going to be on opening day, because it’s absolutely beautiful out here today,” Breidel said.

Mt. La Crosse will be open again Sunday before closing for a few days to make more snow. They plan to re-open again on Thursday.
