Military spouses and veterans most affected by unemployment scams
Employment scams were considered the riskiest of scams from 2018 to 2019
LA CROSSE, Wis (WKBT) – A recent report from the Better Business Bureau is shedding a light on those of us who are most affected by unemployment scams: military spouses and veterans.
Employment scams were considered the riskiest of scams from 2018 to 2019.
That report measures exposure, susceptibility, and monetary loss from scams reported to the BBB scam tracker.
People who are looking for more flexible work or just trying to make ends meet may be more likely to fall victim to an employment scam.
Nearly three-quarters of those who lost money already had trouble paying their monthly bills and more than half were unemployed.
The study also showed that prevention and intervention methods could reduce the likelihood of a financial loss.
People who have heard of similar employment scams are less likely to fall victim to a scam in the future.
Also, respondents reported that interventions by bank tellers and retail employees were helpful in convincing people to walk away before losing money.
