Melrose-Mindoro begins new campaign with new head coach McRoberts

Mustangs must replace 90 percent of offense

Melrose-Mindoro begins a new season tonight with a new head coach in Jason McRoberts, who is succeeding Kevin Christopherson.

The Mustangs went 16-7 last season and fell in the regional final.

Along with a new coach, the Mustangs have to replace 90 percent of their scoring offense from last year. It’s a tall task, and McRoberts says getting that new offense going will actually start with their play on defense.

“We do want to run,” he said. “Last year they did run a lot on JV. The best offense is the one you don’t have to set up, and that’s created by your defense. If we can get steals, create a full court press–all kinds of pressure up and down the court.”

The new era of Mustangs hoops begins Tuesday night against Independence.
