LA CROSSE, Wis. ― Mayo Clinic Health System is recognizing the life and legacy of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by lighting the Cancer and Surgery Center on West Avenue in La Crosse Monday.
Also in celebration of King’s contributions on the federal holiday, Mayo Clinic will light its buildings in its other locations in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.
Beginning at dusk, red, white and blue lights will shine on the Plummer Building in Rochester, Minn.; Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona; the sign at Mayo Clinic in Florida, and Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Austin, Albert Lea, Owatonna and Faribault, Minn.
“Dr. King’s teachings center on justice, equality, courage and determination, as well as the fearlessness to stand in opposition of prejudice, oppression and violence,” said Dr. Caroline Wilker, diversity and inclusion chairwoman for Mayo Clinic Health System, Southwest Wisconsin.
“Dr. King’s vision remains an enduring source of inspiration. Mayo Clinic is committed to advancing racial equity, inclusion and diversity,” Wilker said.

“This is national day of service. It speaks to all us to begin each year making a commitment to Dr. King’s dreams of making our community a better place for all,” she said.
