Mayo Clinic in La Crosse hits COVID-19 treatment milestone
Health system has administered 1,000 monoclonal and antiviral treatments
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse hit a milestone in COVID-19 treatments.
The system announced that it has provided 1,000 infusions on monoclonal antibody treatments and antiviral drugs since November of 2020.
Dr. Edward Malone, a family medicine physician and medical director of Outpatient Treatment Centers, says the treatments are successful and keep the hospital from hitting capacity.
“It decreases your risk of being hospitalized from about 4.5% to about 1.5%, so if we’ve averted that many admissions, that’s what’s basically kept us being able to to take care of patients with covid and with other problems,” Malone says.
Patients can receive these treatments at outpatient centers.
Treatments last about two and a half hours and are not expected to interfere with any other medications.
