Mayo Clinic Heath System-Franciscan Healthcare names new vice president

Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse has a new regional vice president to take over leadership duties.

Dr. Paul Mueller, a native of Winona Minn., will take over for Dr. Tim Johnson who served the community for eight years.

Previously, Mueller has served as the chair of General Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester for the past nine years. It is one of the largest medical divisions in the nation.

Johnson said he is proud to have continued a legacy that began in 1883.

“It’s been an incredible experience,” Johnson said. “We have worked very hard at creating a culture of continuous improvement that really focuses on creating value for patients from the perspective of patients.”

Mueller has worked with Mayo Clinic in Rochester for more than 20 years. Johnson said he brings experience that fits the La Crosse area.

“He has a deep understanding of community care and primary care and serving a population which is perfect for this role,” Johnson said.

He said he is ready to bring new horizons to the region he calls home.

“Reducing cost and improving quality,” Mueller said. “Advancing the health of the people who live in this region and Mayo Clinic’s mission which is to be the most trusted and affordable through
integrated practice, education and research.”

His colleagues believe his hometown roots are a big piece to future success.

“I think that’s really special,” Johnson said.

Mueller said he knows there will be obstacles in the way of his vision.

“One of the biggest challenges is to understand what the concerns are of people who live and work here,” Mueller said.

Mayo Clinic vice president Bobbie Gostout said there are plenty of people to help him along the way.

“He has a rich supply of talent, innovative thought to tap into in order to help him succeed in this role,” Gostout said.

Johnson will remain the vice president until the end of September working toward the permanent transition.

Johnson will remain with Mayo Clinic Health System part-time, focusing on patient care.
