Mayo Clinic Health System celebrates volunteers in La Crosse

Mayo places volunteers in 18 service areas

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — They often are the first person you meet when you enter the hospital, and they always greet you with a smile.

Mayo Clinic Health System is celebrating National Volunteers Week.

Thursday, Mayo’s 150 active volunteers gathered for a special breakfast and to be recognized for their help.

Bob Baranowski and his wife have been volunteering at the hospital for 5 years.

It’s their way to pay if forward.

“I decided to do it because I received medical treatment here and it was a way to give back. And it’s really enjoyable,” said
Bob, who volunteers to transport patients where ever they need to go,

Mayo places volunteers in 18 service areas.

Every area and every volunteer plays an important role.

“Our volunteers are so the overall care we provide to our patients. We treat them with the same integrity that we treat our paid colleagues because they are that important,” said volunteer services coordinator Kate Dunnum.

This year’s volunteer breakfast was special.

It was the first time since the pandemic all the volunteers have gathered in one place.
