MATHCOUNTS Competition tests local students’ math skills

West Salem wins team competition

A different kind of contest today is testing local students’ mathematics knowledge.

Middle school Mathletes are competing in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition. Students from Holmen, Viroqua, West Salem, G-E-T, Wauzeka-Steuben, and Prairie Du Chien Bluff View middle schools competed.

The national MATHCOUNTS program is designed to improve the math skills of American students.

“A lot of these students spend the year preparing for the competition. A lot of the coaches have them participate after school with practice exams and practice problems and things,” said MATHCOUNTS Competition Coordinator Jarrod Holter.

The West Salem team won overall, and West Salem’s Elsa Mitchell and Ethan Heger placed in the top three individual competitors. Viroqua’s Ethan Tubbin took second place in the individual competition.

The top eight individuals and the West Salem team will move on to the state competition.
