PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. — The Prairie du Sac man who asked for as many Christmas cards as possible died in his home Friday shortly after 4 p.m.

Gene Weittenhiller was battling stage four pancreatic cancer.

In late December, we reported that Gene received more than 50,000 cards in the mail.

A final count came out to half a million cards.

His wife Linda said she will continue to read every single card as a way to honor her husband.

The family will be having a private funeral.

In a statement, the family said: “He was a tough man who fought right to the end. All of us were there at the end when he took his last breath. He was not alone. So many expressed this in hte Christmas cards. Indeed, he was not alone and loved by so many.”
