Man shot in back at Trempealeau Co. residence

Relative arrested after shooting

A 52-year-old man accused of shooting his relative’s husband in the back is in custody in Trempealeau County.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department said a woman called to alert authorities at about 12 p.m. on Thursday that an unwelcomed man was in her residence and he did not know she was there.

The woman told authorities her husband arrived at their residence and the unwelcomed man, who was one of her relatives, pulled a gun on her husband in the driveway and ordered him inside.  The woman and responding law enforcement officers heard gunshots.

While responding to the gunshots, the unwelcomed man, William N. Ledford, 52, of Portage, exited the residence. Authorities arrested him without incident.  The car he had driven to the residence had been reported as stolen out of the Wisconsin Dells area.

The husband suffered a gunshot wound in the back. He was transported by Osseo Area Ambulance for treatment.

Ledford is being held in the Trempealeau County Jail on the following charges: first degree attempted homicide, armed robbery, burglary, and possession of stolen vehicle. He is also on parole.

The Osseo, Strum, and Eleva Police Departments, along with the Wisconsin State Patrol and Osseo Area Ambulance and First Responders assisted the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department.
