Man arrested in Eau Claire stabbing

Andrew R. Lawrence arrested for attempted first degree reckless homicide

Eau Claire police arrested a 22-year-old man for attempted first degree reckless homicide who admitted stabbing a man on the 800 block of Water Street on Sunday.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, Andrew R. Lawrence saw a group of people throwing snow or ice at his parked truck and approached them with a knife in his hand. Eau Claire police said a minor physical altercation occurred before Lawrence stabbed a 20-year-old man multiple times. Everyone involved in the incident fled the area.

When police officers arrived in front of 815 Water Street, they found a large amount of blood in the snow and a blood trail leading away from the area. A short time later, an officer found the victim lying in the snow between neighboring houses. He was covered in blood and appeared to have multiple stab wounds.

The victim, whose name has not been released at this time, was transported to a local hospital. Police said it is believed he will survive his injuries.

An officer that responded to Tenth Avenue and Lakeside Avenue found Lawrence. He had blood on his face and hands as well as an injury to his left eye. He told police he had been punched in the eye while on Water Street. Lawrence is currently being held in the Eau Claire County Jail.

Eau Claire police said no other suspects are being sought and no other arrests relating to this incident have been made. The incident is still under investigation by the Eau Claire Police Department Detective Division.

“Generally speaking, random violence is not a major factor in Eau Claire. This type of senseless violent crime is preventable, Eau Claire Police Chief Jerry Staniszewski said. “As a society, we need to do a better job of equipping our youth with the tools necessary to enable them to deal with personal conflicts without resorting to violence.”
