Local Red Cross volunteer set to help communities impacted by a typhoon in Saipan

Red Cross volunteers from our area often volunteer to help out around the country during emergencies, and one is now preparing to head to a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

John Haverty will head to Saipan Thursday morning. The small island is just northeast of Guam, and considered a commonwealth of the U.S.

Haverty will be one of many helping communities on the island impacted by a recent typhoon, and he’s just coming home from helping Hurricane Michael victims in Georgia.

“The ability to help people and do what’s necessary to give them life and hope and happiness, nourishment, shelter, food, whatever it takes to make them whole again. There’s something about that that I’ve always enjoyed,” said Haverty.

He will spend three weeks in Saipan, primarily getting food to some of the most remote communities on the island.
