Local psychologists concerned about substance abuse in parents and effect on area kids
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Chelsea Ale, Ph.D., a child psychologists at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, said drug addicted parents have trouble giving kids the consistency they need.
She said kids with drug addicted parents can suffer from trauma, emotional instability, trouble sleeping and have defiant behaviors at home and at school.
Local psychologists are working with school districts and pediatricians to try and spot these problems early so kids don’t fall through the cracks.
“It may be [about] helping that parent get on the right track so that they can provide that for their kids . . . Their hearts are usually in the right places, but addictions are very strong and really require a lot of support” said Ale.
Ale said the coulee council on addiction has “amazing services” to help those with addictions. You can contact them at www.couleecouncil.org or by calling 608-784-4177.
