Local political leader supports Weekend Voting Act
Bill would move Election Day from Tuesday to the weekend
LA CROSSE, WI (WKBT) — A La Crosse County Board supervisor is hoping to jumpstart a bill in Congress that would move Election Day.
Andrew Londre joined with people from 21 other states to urge Congressional leaders to consider the Weekend Voting Act. The bill would move Election Day from Tuesday to the weekend.
Londre says holding Election Day on a work day makes it harder for people to vote and creates long lines at polling places.
Londre referenced the Census Bureau, which points out the number one reason people don’t vote is they can’t get off work.
“We still lag well behind other developed countries in terms of voter turnout, most western countries have voter turnout numbers in the 70’s and ours is around 50%, and I think that we’re better than that, we’re better than 50% voter turnout in Presidential, Congressional elections,” Londre said.
Londre helped write a letter that was delivered to the White House and Congressional leaders offices.
