Local organizations to give school supplies, clothes to low-income families

Catholic Charities, Salvation Army now taking applications

Two area organizations are teaming up to help children head back to the classroom with the supplies and clothing they need.

On Monday Catholic Charities started taking applications from low-income families who are in need of backpacks and school supplies.

The Salvation Army is starting its “Stepping Back to School” program which will provide a new shirt, pants and shoes to each child registered.

“It’s one of those things that people take for granted. Yes. I’ll get my kid a whole bunch of new clothes for school and for some people it’s a huge struggle just to provide a shirt, shoes and a pair of pants and that’s just a small way you can help someone else,” said the public relations director of the Salvation Army Julie Nelson.

If you would like to register for the program or sponsor a child you can contact the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities or La Crosse County Human Services.

With the help of sponsors the Salvation Army will provide one back to school outfit for up to 450 kids in grades kindergarten through 12.

Catholic Charities provides school supplies to more than 1,000 students.
