Local organization raises money for La Crosse K9 Unit

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- One local organization is stepping up to help the La Crosse Police Department.

The Apartment Association of the La Crosse Area is hosting their 4th annual meatball dinner to support the La Crosse Police K-9 Unit.

The event is taking place at the American Legion Post 51 and will also include a silent auction and a bake sale.

The Apartment Association says five years ago we were hearing concerns from our tenants about not feeling safe in their neighborhoods because of crime and drug activity.

They learned that the K-9 unit only exists because of private donations and they wanted to help.

“It’s a great feeling knowing our community has our back, not just the police department but our program specifically because our unit is funded through the donations of the community, and for our program to have 5 K-9s is pretty remarkable. As a K-9 handler myself, it means a lot,” said La Crosse K9 Handler, Steve Hughes.

To date, the fundraiser has donated nearly $16,000 towards the La Crosse K-9 unit.
