Local organization hosting virtual events to raise awareness about suicide prevention

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – In 2018, 888 Wisconsinites took their own life.

It’s the 10th leading cause of death overall in the state but the second for people between the ages 10 to 34.

That’s according to the most recent data from the CDC.

Now there is fear that it will rise even more because of the struggles people have faced due to the pandemic.

That’s why one organization is dedicated to raising awareness about it in our community.

The La Crosse Suicide Prevention Initiative hosted a virtual awareness event from Riverside Park on Wednesday.

During the virtual event members of the organization presented the park’s new bench that’s dedicated to those who’ve died by suicide.

They hope that it will catch people’s eyes and get them talking about it.

“As people sit down on the bench we just hope that they take a minute to read the plaque and maybe they’ll start their own conversation about suicide and suicide prevention,” said Tim Blumentritt, social worker & member of La Crosse Suicide Prevention Initiative.

The organization is holding its annual Suicide Prevention Summit virtually on Thursday, Sept. 17th.

There are already over 200 people register to attend!
