Local lawmakers learn about flood mitigation efforts at Jersey Valley Dam in Westby
WESTBY, Wis. (WKBT)- It’s been almost 3 years since severe flooding caused the Jersey Valley Dam in the Westby area to breach and it’s still waiting to be repaired.
State Senator Brad Pfaff and Representative Ron Kind toured the dam and got an update on flood mitigation efforts.
Jersey Valley was one of about 5 dams that failed in that area during the 2018 floods.
Kind says there needs to be a long-term plan to protect people’s property and ultimately their lives.
“Instead of dealing with the damage after it’s been done, this is all about preventing it from occurring to begin with and the long-term flood mitigation that’s needed and I think there are solutions to it, working with private land owners, the farmers in the area with land and water, conservation programs,” said Kind.
He also says they’re hoping to have recommendations on long-term solutions by the end of this month.
They would then be given to the public for input.
