Local firefighters give the gift of fire safety this holiday season.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, about 170 fires are caused by Christmas decorations or Christmas trees in America.

Lt. Andrew Formanek with the La Crosse Fire Department said it is important to keep Christmas trees away from any sources of heat, keep them watered and make sure they aren’t blocking any exits.

Formanek also said to follow manufacturer guidelines about stringing lights together, look out for worn out cords and replace any loose lights.

“About one in four Christmas trees that do light on fire throughout the nation are caused by the actual decorations on the Christmas tree,” said Formanek.

It’s also the season for space heaters. Formanek said to keep space heaters three feet away from anything flammable, never leave them unattended and make sure they’re plugged directly into the wall.
