Local family designs and builds their own zamboni

ONALASKA, Wis.(WKBT)- A local family is giving skaters and hockey players an extra option to have fun this winter.

The Siegert family along with some neighbors built a zamboni that is being used on the Pierce Park pond in Onalaska.

The machine resurfaces the ice, making it smoother.

The family says they have been using shovels and brooms for the last few years before they built the contraption.

Their father, who helped design the zamboni says, it makes it more convenient for the community to improve their skills on the ice.

“There’s about twice a week they can get into the Omni Center and practice indoors, but if you can get outside and enjoy the ice outside as well, it definitely provides extra ice time, extra exercise,” Jake Siegert said. “You know, it’s just a great way to stay active especially in our nice, Midwest climate here.”

Jake’s son, James, says he practices on the frozen pond four days a week.

He and his younger brother, Henry, both play for the Onalaska/Holmen Tornado Youth Hockey program.
