Local company recognized for efforts to hire developmentally disabled

A local company wins a statewide award for giving job opportunities to a part of the workforce that is sometimes overlooked.

Northwest Hardwoods in Onalaska was recognized earlier this week at the Wisconsin Job Honor Awards for their work in hiring people with developmental disabilities.

Working with Aurora Vocational Services, Northwest Hardwoods currently has two people with disabilities on their payroll and another working as an intern.

“We really prefer not think of them as anybody different,” said general manager Mark Wells. “They’re really an integral part of what we do, no different than anybody that we would get from ManPower, anybody that we have walk in off the street.”

The Job Honor Awards were first launched in 2014 and also recognize businesses in Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois.
