Local cancer survivors gather at the La Crosse Center to celebrate life

Cancer reaches no bounds, impacting everyone it comes touch with. And for many of those people, true comfort comes in knowing you’re not alone.

That’s the purpose of the annual Celebrate Life Picnic held Tuesday night at the La Crosse Center.

Cancer survivors, as well as their families, and even their doctors were there  from both Mayo Clinic and Gundersen Health Systems.

For at least one cancer survivor, the diagnoses is something he’ll remember the rest of his life.

“She’s out in the waiting room and she had to come in and he talked about it and I was crying and everything else. It happened like four years ago, I’ve been a survivor for two years now, cancer free now,” said Jim Gilbertson.

This was the 25th and final year of the event. Organizers say attendance was just getting too low with a number of other events going on in the area.
