Local businesses honored during Disability Employment Awareness Month
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Two local businesses were honored for their efforts to recruit and hire job seekers with disabilities on Wednesday.
October is Disability Employment Awareness Month in Wisconsin, and The Department of Workforce Development presented the Exemplary Employer Award to Culver’s and The Breakfast Club & Pub in La Crosse.
This year’s awareness theme is “The Right Talent, Right Now”, emphasizing the important role that people with disabilities play in Wisconsin’s economic success.
Currently, Culver’s has two workers with disabilities – Jesse and Mackayla – which Culver’s says are a vital part of the team.
“Both Jesse and Mackayla have been with us for some time,” said Dave Sather, Owner and Operator of Culver’s in La Crosse. “Jesse’s been with us for close to four years, Mackayla coming up on a year. I don’t see either one of them with a disability. They work just as hard as anybody else does here. So, this award to me was just as much given for them than it is for us here in La Crosse.”
The Department of Workforce Development also honored The Breakfast Club & Pub with presentations from Workforce Development officials along with service providers.
The business has worked with APTIV for years, and have helped the Breakfast Club hire 3 current employees.
Co-owner of the Breakfast Club & Pub, Jackie Miller, said “Our employees Lois, Loretta, and Garrett, it’s more for them. They’re great employees. They’re reliable, they show up, it’s great to work with APTIV, and we believe everyone an equal in the employment world. Like I mentioned, they’re some of the best workers we have.”
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month to build awareness of skills that job seekers with disabilities bring to the workforce, and to encourage more employers to hire workers with disabilities.
