Local brunch event focuses on perception of drug addiction
'Strength Through Hope' looks at a family's journey to recovery
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — With all the local news on drug abuse and drug busts, one group is looking to change public perception of drug addiction.
The 3rd annual ‘Strength Through Hope’ brunch allowed attendees to hear how one family has been impacted by addiction. During the event they heard from a family who is on their own journey of recovery, and got a preview of a video that shares the stories of other families in similar circumstances.
One of the speakers at today’s event says people need to start looking at drug addiction as a brain disease.
“That message needs to be out there because people have a misconception of what drug abuse is all about. It’s not going away. The La Crosse area is not immune to it, and it’s running strong in our streets right now,” said Coulee Council on Addictions Board of Directors Member Tom Thompson.
Thompson also says that since La Crosse is in between the Twin Cities and Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago, we are seeing an increase of drug availability in the area.
