Local bike store owner has advice for keeping your balance during winter riding

The owner of the Wrench and Roll collective in La Crosse, Matthew Christen, is offering advice about wintertime riding.

Christen said roads can often be slippery and icy during this time of the year, and studded tires can prevent slipping. He said he’s been riding on studded tires for ten years and has never fallen on ice.

While protecting your face, hands and feet from cold is important, Christen said that you may want to avoid wearing too many layers.

“Really, to ride in the wintertime is actually a test of how to stay cooler, not hotter. Because, if you put some layers of clothes on, and you start pumping your pedals, you will get warm,” said Christen.

Long johns are good option for some extra warmth, said Christen, but he also said wintertime biking has a golden rule: Don’t wear cotton clothing next to your skin; you’ll get too warm.
