Local amateur radio operators spend 24 hours preparing for disaster

For 24 hours people across the world take part in the American Radio Relay League Field Day.

Enthusiasts were invited to Jostad Farm near West Salem to make as many contacts with other operators as they could in one day.

One of the events co-chairs, Drew Neve , said the event simulates situations where emergency communications are needed and operators may need to make connections all night.

” Our club does a lot of work in terms of tornado spotting in the area. We have people that will help in [situations] like a few years ago when they had the floods down in Wisconsin Dells, the Lake Delton area, ” said Neve .

Some operators were using a newer digital ham radio mode that can send information even when the signal is poor.
