Local amateur radio operators participate in national Field Day
The local Mississippi Valley Amateur Radio Association is participating in Field Day
HOLMEN, Wis (WKBT) – This weekend, amateur radio operators in the area are competing for a little more than just bragging rights– it’s also about safety.
The local Mississippi Valley Amateur Radio Association, or MVARA, is participating in Field Day.
Field day is an opportunity for amateur radio operators to test their equipment and communications skills during local and national disaster situations.
Participants are awarded points for successfully connecting to various radio stations across the country.
But as Bill Kleinschmidt, a member of MVARA, maintains, the most important aspect is to help others, “More than anything, this an emergency preparedness drill. So that we can bring our equipment out, set it up, in a quick way, and get radio stations on the air to pass communications from one place to another.”
Radio operators can be a part of a group or participate by themselves from home.
The event began Saturday at 1 p.m. and will continue through 1 pm. Sunday.
