LHI, Riverside Corporate Wellness partner to ‘change direction’ of mental health
Campaign to kick off March 23
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — La Crosse is at the forefront when it comes to raising awareness for mental illness.
The “Campaign to Change Direction” will be kicking off next week. It’s a national effort to change the way people think about mental health.
The campaign in La Crosse is a joint effort between LHI and Riverside Corporate Wellness. They held their last meeting for the launch Tuesday morning.
“I think it’s important and necessary that we begin to recognize that mental wellness is just as important as physical health and wellness,” said Michelle McClellan of Riverside Corporate Wellness.
The group says the key to treating mental illness is knowing the warning signs and letting others know they can get help.
“Our goal is to increase awareness in recognizing in ourselves and in others when somebody is suffering emotionally, and the willingness to reach out, show compassion and make an effort to help find a solution so that we no longer have to suffer in silence or be ashamed or embarrassed to suffer from something like mental illness,” said McClellan.
La Crosse will be the first community in the country to launch the Campaign to Change Direction at the local level.
There will be a kickoff event at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 23rd at the Weber Center. The event is free and open to the public.
