La Crosse’s Mayor Kabat joins students in highlighting importance of school gardens
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — School gardens are being celebrated in La Crosse.
Mayor Tim Kabat joined 3rd graders from Spence Elementary at the school’s outdoor classroom Tuesday morning.
The mayor helped plant vegetable seedlings, took a tour of the space and read a story to the kids.
The visit comes ahead of Wisconsin School Garden Day, which is May 23rd.
Teachers say as students learn to care for plants, their compassion blossoms too.
“They’re more kind and caring to the plants, to nature, they are just really receptive to trying new foods, trying new things,” said Kristy Duchateau, Spence Elementary School garden program director.
Other elementary schools in our area will hold School Garden Day activities next week.
