La Crosse’s International Friendship Gardens receives $5,000 donation

La Crosse received a gift from one of its sister cities on Friday.

The La Crosse-Bantry Friendship Association donated $5,000 to the International Friendship Gardens at Riverside Park. The City of Bantry is in Ireland.

The money will be used to build a replica of an anchor that sits in Bantry’s main square. La Crosse’s anchor will be a central piece of the new Irish garden addition to the Friendship Gardens.

La Crosse and Bantry have been sister cities for 10 years now. Chuck Hanson, president of the Riverside International Friendship Gardens said the donation shows the relationship between the two cities is still going strong.

“It’s just wonderful to see these organizations, these sister city relationships continue and mature and develop over the years. The fact that it’s lasted ten years is a good indication it’s going to continue for a long time,” Hanson said.

Hanson hopes to open the Irish Gardens in time for Irish Fest in August.
