La Crosse’s Gundersen Health System recognized for organ donation efforts

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Gundersen Health System is being recognized for its lifesaving organ donation efforts.

The La Crosse-based system received a bronze “Award of Hope”, as well as the “Excellence in Tissue Donation” award from the University of Wisconsin Organ Tissue Donation program.

According to the awards committee, more than 120 thousand people in the U.S. are waiting for an organ donation and 20 people die every day waiting for an organ.

“It’s important for us to engage with the hospitals throughout the state, train and educate our physicians and nurses on how to recognize when triggers are met for organ donation, and how to recognize when families are ready to talk about the possibility of organ donation,” said UW’s Wendy Mordak.

Along with those two awards, UW Organ Tissue Donation gave the “Donn Dexter” award to Dr. Christine Waller. Dr. Waller is a member of Gundersen’s general surgery department. She was recognized for her work in supporting organ donations.
