La Crosse students take part in archaeological dig
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — La Crosse elementary students were looking for secrets hidden in the dirt.
Fifth grade students from State Road Elementary School were working on the early stages of a new community trail Friday afternoon.
The trail will connect the school to the Chad Erickson Memorial Park.
The students partnered with the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center and the La Crosse Community Forest Project.
The partnership helps show kids how what they learn in class can impact the real world.
“They’re not just learning from a book and this adds on top of they did learn about these early Native American cultures in fourth grade, now in fifth grade. Maybe they’ll find or discover something that was left behind by the Native Americans years ago,” said Jean Dowiasch from the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center.
The area was labeled as an archeological zone by the city because of previous artifact and burial site discoveries.
