La Crosse School Board to host informational meeting for candidates

LA CROSSE (WKBT) — The La Crosse School Board is hosting a virtual informational meeting for people interested in running for school board.

The meeting, via Zoom at 5 p.m. Wednesday, will feature discussions of what people can expect if and when they are elected. People can RSVP by sending an email to or calling (608) 789-7659 to get the zoom link.

“You can find information about our policies, our bylaws, our mission,” said board President Juan Jimenez.

But with the increase in threats at schools, pushback against mask and vaccine mandates, there is concern that people may not want to run.

“I think people are concerned because of the partisanship you see in the media, the national level and even potentially at the state level,” said Jimenez.

Despite the partisanship that exists in politics, La Crosse School Board members say the board acts as a unit.

“You need to set aside your political beliefs,” board member Brad Quarberg said.

The board hopes to encourage people to run during the informational session and remind people the focus of the board is education.

“You need to want to see public education succeed and know that its important in its role in democracy,” said Quarberg.

As for the reward that comes from serving on the school board, members says it’s all about the students.

“When I look at the students on graduation day and to think about all the effort that went in,” said Jimenez.
