La Crosse Regional Airport welcomes world’s 3rd largest plane

La Crosse’s regional airport has a very big guest.

The third largest aircraft in the world landed at the airport Thursday.  The Russian plane is here picking up products from Chart Industry in La Crosse.

It’s so big that the airport has to taxi the plane along from one spot to another because the pavement is not strong enough to carry its weight.

The plane has a wingspan of  240 feet and holds about 100 tons of cargo, making it easier for businesses like Chart to ship products overseas.

“It would probably take I believe over a month to ship it to their location out in the Middle East. They can get it out there in about  a day this way,” said  Nader Kaharazi from the La Crosse Regional Airport.

The plane will be loaded with Chart’s cargo on Friday.
