La Crosse Police Department handing out $0 parking tickets

The La Crosse Police Department is helping people ease into the new year with a warning.

Officers began handing out zero-dollar parking tickets to first time offenders in November, and everyone gets another freebie with the new year.

Those $0 tickets are issued for first offenses for alternate side and overtime parking. La Crosse’s Parking Utility Coordinator says they proposed the first-time warnings after increasing the initial fine from $10 to $15.

“It’s not for our frequent fliers who do it every day. It’s for the tourists, people like that who maybe they don’t know the rules, they don’t understand them,” said City of La Crosse Parking Utility Coordinator Jim Flottmeyer.

The City has already issued about 5,000 $0 tickets for each of those parking violations, for a grand total of more than 10,000 tickets.
