La Crosse man hit and killed while vacationing in Florida
JACKSONVILLE, Fl. (WKBT) — A La Crosse man was hit and killed by an SUV while walking on the sidewalk in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, according to WJAX-TV.
The Jacksonville television station reports, 24-year-old Michael Gunderson was walking with friends around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when the driver of a Ford Expedition jumped the curb onto the grass and accelerated at a high speed down the sidewalk.
The driver struck Gunderson, a palm tree and a parked car, and then rear-ended a Jacksonville Transportation Authority trolley bus before coming to a stop.
Police say Gunderson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gunderson’s friends, who spoke with the TV station, said he planned to drive home to La Crosse later Sunday morning.
Friends said they were walking on the sidewalk when the truck came speeding toward them, jumped the curb and hit Gunderson.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and charges are possible, pending toxicology results and speed calculations.
Friends who were with Gunderson at the time of the tragedy have already set up a GoFundMe page to help Gunderson’s family with funeral and burial expenses.
