La Crosse Logger baseball game celebrates cancer survivors
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The 27th annual Celebrate Life event was held at Copeland Park this afternoon in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day.
Survivors of any kind of cancer were invited to come and be treated to up to five free tickets and a concession voucher.
Each survivor was introduced on the pitching mound before throwing out a ceremonial first pitch. Last year the event set a Copeland Park record for largest first pitch. Each pitcher received a complimentary baseball.
Organizers estimated about 750 people attended the sold-out event.
Mayo Clinic Cancer Center director of nursing and patient care Rachel Bishop said, “This our second year of doing the Celebrate Life at The La Crosse Loggers. We’re really just celebrating anyone who cancer has touched their life. They could be a survivor; they could be going through treatment right now, but — just anybody who’s been touched by cancer.”
The event is a collaboration between Gundersen Health System and Mayo Clinic Health System.
