La Crosse Jazz Orchestra’s free park series to continue with ‘A Trumpet Storm’
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — The La Crosse Jazz Orchestra’s free Jazz in the Park series continues with “A Trumpet Storm” featuring two notable guest performers at 7 p.m. Sunday in Riverside Park.
Brent Turney, a trumpet virtuoso with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, will perform trumpet legend Maynard Fergusson’s “Maria” from “West Side Story” and Clifford Brown’s famous “Joy Spring.” Turney will play additional selections as tributes to Gordon Goodwin’s great West Coast band and bebop trumpet great Kenny Dorham.
La Crosse Jazz Orchestra director Greg Balfany describes Turney “as perhaps the premiere trumpet lead artist in the entire Midwest.”
Also on the program is Eau Claire singer/actress Cathy Reitz, who will offer performances of Ella Fitzgerald’s “I Won’t Dance,” Julie London’s “Black Coffee” and the music of Diane Schurr and Natalie Cole.
The Cavalier Theater is the alternate venue if it rains.
The series will conclude Sunday, Aug. 1, with Wisconsin’s best-known jazz singer Janet Planet as featured artist.
