La Crosse Housing Authority goes smoke free at properties

Improving the health and quality of life of local tenants is the focus of a new policy in La Crosse.

The La Crosse Housing Authority is now enforcing a smoke free policy at 11 properties in the city.

Residents will no longer be allowed to use cigarettes, pipes and electronic cigarettes in units or on the properties.

The changes follow a requirement put in place by the Housing and Urban Development Secretary.

Officials hope the change impacts smokers and everyone in the area.

“There’s no way of predicting the path of second hand smoke so there is no good way of preventing second hand smoke from entering your apartment,” said Judy Zabel, Health Educator with La Crosse County.

After two warnings, offenders will receive a fine from the housing authority.

If a tenant is cited five times, the housing authority starts the eviction process.
