La Crosse gathering honors National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Members of the La Crosse community gathered Tuesday night to remember those who died while homeless and those who experienced homelessness during their lifetime.
The group met at Burns Park and walked to Cameron Park where they held a small ceremony.
28 candles were lit for the people who passed away this year.
“It’s important to remember everybody in our community,” said Becky Koske, the assistant department director of Couleecap. “These individuals are our neighbors, our family, our friends, and it’s important that they are honored for their lives and for their experiences.”
National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day is held every winter solstice, as it marks the longest night of the year.
