La Crosse Fire Department, Red Cross to install free smoke detectors

Smoke detector install this weekend

A campaign this weekend is working to bring a smoke detector to every La Crosse household.

The Home Fire Preparedness Campaign will teach residents what they can do in case of a fire and install smoke alarms where needed. The partnership between the American Red Cross and the La Crosse Fire Department is one of many campaigns happening across the country.

The La Crosse Fire Department chief says smoke detectors are often your first warning to a fire.

“With the lack of residential sprinklers that would detect and extinguish the fire, that is your only method for becoming alert to the fact that there is a fire,” said La Crosse Fire Department Chief Gregg Cleveland.
