LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – A La Crosse teacher is being recognized for helping students succeed.

Maggie McHugh, who teaches at La Crosse Polytechnical School, received the 2021 National University Teacher Award for the Midwest region.

The award recognizes teachers who use inspirational teaching practices to engage students, build their confidence and create an inclusive environment.

McHugh focuses on Social and Emotional Learning in the classroom.

This style of learning teaches students how to regulate emotions and work collaboratively to prepare kids for life outside of school.

“Being honored as a teacher who focuses on that really gets to the core of who we are as educators,” she said. “We’re here for students to learn and grow, not just in their academic content but more importantly as young adults who are ready to change the world.”

A colleague nominated McHugh in March.

One of five regional winners in the United States, she now is now eligible for the National University Teacher Award.
