La Crosse Distilling Co. sets up community pick-up sites to hand out free hand sanitizer

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – “Business as usual” is off the table for one local distillery, but it’s not because of mandated orders.

La Crosse Distilling Co. started making hand sanitizer earlier this month in response to the coronavirus outbreak, but it’s going one step further.

On Sunday, staff handed out free hand sanitizer at seven locations throughout our area.

• La Crosse Distilling Company
• La Crosse City Hall Parking Lot
• Onalaska City Hall Parking Lot East
• Holmen High School
• West Salem Police Station
• La Crescent Firestation
• Viroqua Police Station

It didn’t take long for them to run out; cars we’re lined up down the streets!

Staff says they’re trying to keep up with demand, but there’s been some challenges.

One is getting more plastic bottles, which are imported from China.

But they’re not letting these barriers hold them back.

“We are working very hard. Everybody, all hands on deck, have been putting in so much effort to move production from spirits to hand sanitizer,” said Angela Welchert, Community Outreach for the distillery.

The company has already handed out several thousand bottles.

It plans to make larger batches for healthcare workers, essential businesses, and those who are most vulnerable.
