La Crosse couple finds love in Gundersen hospital hallway

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.  If you’re looking for love, a La Crosse couple says stop — let it find you.

It can be easy to lose your way when you’re not sure where you’re going. Deb Drexler was living life in the not-so-fast lane.  The Gundersen Health System shuttle driver was cruising the hospital halls alone when she pumped the brakes.

“I noticed Terry right away. He kind of looked at me like, who is she?” recalled Drexler. Deb made her move, offering to show new volunteer Terry Drexler around the hospital and town. “It was two years today, real close to Valentine’s,” Terry says.

One date led to dozens of others and eventually to Terry’s making a move of his own. “He was leaving and he just gave me a kiss and it was like, oh that was kind of nice.” says Deb. Terry stole the first kiss. A few months later, Deb took Terry’s last name. “He’s like hey, you want to get married? I’m like yeah, I think I do.” remembers Deb.

The newlyweds never imagined the hospital hallway would lead to love. An unexpected journey they are excited to take together. “Look where you’re not expecting to be finding someone. If it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen.” says Deb.

“That’s the way I feel, too.” adds Terry.

Deb and Terry kept their relationship a secret right up until they got married in January. The Drexlers stopped volunteering at Gundersen. They were both hired by the hospital’s valet company.
