La Crosse County promotes drug drop-off sites
ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) — Local communities are teaming up to help battle a growing drug problem here in La Crosse.
They’re promoting National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day by opening up five collection sites in La Crosse County for people to drop off their unused, expired or unwanted drugs on Saturday.
The Onalaska Police Department is one of the locations that opened it doors to help get prescription drugs off the street. Officers say in just the first hour, more than a hundred cars dropped off medication, with more than 400 expected to stop by today.
“We’re getting the hard narcotic pain relievers off the streets so they’re not being abused, they’re getting disposed of properly, but also we’re keeping all this medication that’s being dropped off out of the landfill, or out of the streams and lakes and rivers,” said Sgt. Jasson Jobe.
Officers will secure all the medications dropped off, then turn it over to the Drug Enforcement Administration to be disposed of.
