La Crosse County Jail inmate died of natural causes, probe finds
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Jeffrey R. Nottestad, 57, of Hixton, Minn., died of natural causes while in custody in the La Crosse County Jail on Feb. 4, according to an independent investigation.
In accordance with the sheriff’s department policy, it asked the La Crosse Police Department to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The police department’s investigative bureau reviewed reports, surveillance video and phone calls. It also interviewed the arresting officer, jail staff, family and nursing staff, according to a news release signed my Sheriff Jeffrey Wolf. An autopsy was performed at Mayo Clinic Health System in Rochester, Minn.
The autopsy and investigation determined that Nottestad died of natural causes, with no foul play suspected.
He had been jailed since Jan. 31 on a probation warrant issued from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Jail Staff discovered Nottestad unresponsive in his cell at about 10:30 a.m. shortly after speaking with him. Staff members’ efforts to revive him failed.
“The La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office is saddened that an individual passed away while in our custody,” Wolf said. “Our condolences to the Nottestad family.”
