La Crosse County Historical Society highlights the area’s remarkable women in guided tour

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – La Crosse County’s Historical Society is helping local history buffs remember the city’s important women in their “Discover the Silent City: Remarkable Women in La Crosse II” tour.

This is the second time the society is covering historical women.

They found so many during their first women-focused tour in 2016 that they couldn’t fit them all into one event.

A guided walking tour through the Oak Grove Cemetery included actors representing those women from the past.

“They vary from somebody whose name we still recognize, Ellen Hixon, who was a philanthropist and preservationist … to people like an opera singer … who was famous in her day and today nobody’s heard of Anna Hickish,” said Executive Director of LCHS Peggy Derrick.

This is a yearly event for the historical society.

Organizers say tickets sell out fast, so keep an eye on the society’s website for the next tour.
