La Crosse Board of Public Works approves ‘Food for Fines’ program

Drivers in La Crosse can help people in need this December and pay off some fines.

La Crosse’s Board of Public Works approved a ‘Food for Fines’ program.

The program allows those with a parking citation to pay fines with non-perishable food items and winter clothing. The amount donated must be equal to the fine owed. Receipts should be brought with the donations to show how much each item is worth. The donations will be given to area shelters.

Parking officials are hopeful the program will prove popular. “I think it would be something that people could easily do instead of cash, and they feel like that they’re then also doing something for the community as well.” said La Crosse Parking Utility Coordinator Greg Elsen.

The program will be in effect from December 2 to 30 in the city of La Crosse.
