La Crosse area kids participate in unique cooking challenge
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Kids in our community are taking their talents to the kitchen.
GROW La Crosse is hosting it’s first ever Kids Cooking Challenge.
It offers a fun and safe way to teach children about healthy and fresh foods with hands-on learning.
Nearly 70 kids picked up a mystery ingredient bag on Tuesday from the GROW greenhouse, and over the next two days they’ll use the items inside to create an orginal, unique recipe.
The Gardens at GROW have been left empty because of the pandemic, and this challenge offers a different way to get kids to think about what they eat and where it comes from.
“This past summer we weren’t able to have kids in the garden, so what we did was we created videos so they could get the education that they want. But it’s not the same as hands-on,” said Zayna Flahaut, a dietetic intern at Viterbo University and GROW employee. “We wanted to bring it home, so these bags will provide the ingredients that they need to do it at home.”
Some kids received a beginner bag, while others registered for a bigger challenge – an advanced bag. Two original dishes will be chosen to receive a prize, and be highlighted on the GROW website.
Registration for this event has closed and results will be announced on December 10.
